Urban Survival – Disaster Preparedness-Emergency Survival Preparedness

Urban Survival – Disaster Preparedness

Emergency Survival Preparedness

For some people, urban survival is the scariest form of emergency survival preparedness, because you are not just facing the quiet isolation of the mountains, the desert or forest, you’re facing what could possibly be desperate masses of humanity who may be convinced that they need what you have to survive.

Are You Prepared for This? Do you have any idea of where your next meal is coming from?

Urban Emergency Survival : A Red Cross worker handing out meals from a disaster services van emergency survival preparednessUrban survival is a skill, and like any skill, it must be learned. Stay alert, stay mobile and be ready to run, but better yet, be prepared with the knowledge to survive and possibly thrive in an urban disaster in your own home and neighborhood. Urban survival is about promoting sustainable living within one’s urban environment; the principals of organic food production, alternative energy and minimizing the use of non-renewable resources and the reuse or recycling of everything possible come into play.

The following general information on starting out in an urban survival scenario is based on personal experience and research. You’ll begin to understand that the preparation for a year of urban survival is much more than just stockpiling several hundred pounds of dry food. There is so much more to surviving an urban disaster that the task can be mind-boggling. You’ll see, though, that with the proper information and the will to start preparing yourself and family, you will find it is not as tedious or expensive as you may think.

Just as you would with outdoor or wilderness survival preparation, you must begin by making a list of possible scenarios that you could experience in your urban area. Once you have made a list of possible urban survival situations, make a list of survival supplies and skills you might need in each scenario. Know how to use those survival skills along with the supplies that you have and (you’ll need to learn what supplies you’re lacking), your chances for surviving any urban survival scenario begins to look more probable.

No matter where you live or how you live, having a good survival kit is an absolute must. With the threats of terrorist attack, natural disaster, economic collapse, or a pandemic, you need to have a survival plan in place quickly that is tailored to the needs of your family and doesn’t depend on your relocation or you being around as the leader in the unfortunate event that you become a casualty. Good survival training and preparation for you and your family significantly increases the odds in your family’s favor.

If you find yourself in a survival situation, your first priority is that you must make up your mind that you are going to survive. The very last thing you can do is panic. Panic is your worst enemy at that time. Your ability to think clearly and react is your most valuable survival skill in a situation or an undesirable situation for that matter. In situations such as flooding and power outages, contaminated water may be your only source of water. After your emergency supply of water has been expended, you’ll need to purify any more supplies of water if you don’t have a larger supply handy. The wisest thing you can do before this situation arises is learning how.

emergency survival preparedness

An Urban Survival course or book will help prepare you and your family for these types of emergency situations. Beyond personal supplies, surviving an ugly urban situation depends on a lot of how you choose to behave. If we take into account the idea that of most people, a good 80% will not be prepared for any survival situation, it could mean that your family’s survival hinges on the actions you take now. We can assume that there may be scavenger’s rush on almost every well-known sources of survival necessities, such as food and water.

Having these necessities stockpiled beforehand will keep you out of this horde of looting and stealing sea of desperation. Crime will only lead to destruction and will eventually undermine your ability to survive. Being able to take care of yourself and family will not only keep you out of the hordes, it will also prevent you and your family from becoming refugees or worse yet, victims. This is not in the least desirable as you may well lose all control as well as your freedom, and most likely lose the ability to cope very well. Just think of what happened in the Superdome in New Orleans after Katrina struck.

The entire family should be part of the preparation and planning and is the key to surviving comfortably during an emergency or disaster. Everyone in the family over 10 should take a class on basic self-defense, and firearm safety. Shut your fuse box or circuit breaker off for a few days over the weekend and your kids will provide a list a mile long of things they think they need. After you’ve whittled down their list make your list of the things you absolutely can’t do without and start there. Food for your family, pets and maintaining some resemblance to your lifestyle for sanity, you will soon begin to understand the magnitude of survival in a place with no power, water or other services. By hoping for the best but preparing for the worst you will assure yourself and your family a reasonable chance of survival in any unreasonable situation.

I have read many books on this subject. Most, while thorough, provide what seems to be an endless list of expensive supplies and even more expensive training. I have recently witnessed Urban Survival Program. It doesn’t overwhelm, yet instead provides all necessary information with common sense, clear direction and solid advice on obtaining supplies and training in a clear methodical manner.

Survivalists everywhere understand that preparation is essential to survival.

Emergency Survival Preparedness, Making Your Plan

Emergency Survival Preparedness, Making Your Plan

The more information we can acquire about emergency survival preparedness, the more disaster awareness we’ll have and thus the more we increase our chances of survival.

As we all know, natural disaster or terrorist attack can occur anytime. One of the major mistakes that people make is assuming that those catastrophic events will never happen to them. When a disaster does strike, most people’s first instinct is to panic. This is the last thing you want to happen. Panic is your worst enemy.

Panic : Panic button in red on yellow and black panel emergency survival preparedness

You can save a copy to your computer, tablet, cell phone or flash card – and if you’re worried about the possibility of electronic devices failing during an emergency, you can print a hardcopy of every publication.

It should go without saying then, that the key to surviving any type of disaster, is to prepare for it beforehand.Preparation and forethought are the best ways to fight panic. Thinking about what you need to do and when you need to do it, are keys in ensuring that you’ll be ready for to secure not only your own survival but that of that of your family as well. The question is, are you ready? If you are not, below are some of the things that you can do to prepare for any type of disaster.

Talk with your family about potential disasters that can happen in the general area where you live and why it’s necessary to prepare for them. Involve each member of your family in the planning process, by showing them simple steps that can increase their safety. By doing this, you can help reduce their anxiety about emergencies and help any tendency they may have to panic. Make out lists.

You’ll need a list of provisions and supplies that you can pack in an emergency survival kit and make sure you pack enough to last for 3 days. You need a list of what you should do as well as what you shouldn’t do and a timeline of when you should do it. It’s also advantageous to have a list of where you can go and where you can’t. You should have multiples of these last two lists depending on the type of disaster you are going to facing.

You should have a separate survival kit for each member of the family since each person needs are different. Make sure everyone knows where to find their survival kit and make sure that they keep their respective kits freshly stocked with the supplies that they are going to need.

For example, if you have a child with asthma, you’ll need to make sure that their survival kit is supplied with emergency breathers and medicines to keep their airways clear. If you have a diabetic in the family, they’ll need to make sure their survival kit has enough insulin or oral medication to get them through a minimum for 3 days or a least a week if possible. This is to make sure that they have what is needed before emergency help can arrive or if you have to evacuate your home. the women in the family will definitely have different needs than the men in the family, so it simply makes sense that the contents of the survival kits are going to be different.

Develop an evacuation plan for your family. This is where your lists of what to do and what not to do as well as the list of where you can go and where you can’t go are important. First gather facts about the type of disasters that happen in your areas such as Earthquakes, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Floods, House Fires and Wild Fires. Make plans on where you would go if your home is unsafe and you need to evacuate. Pick two different meeting places one in your neighborhood and one outside your neighborhood in case your neighborhood is being evacuated. Family members could be at different locations when a disaster strikes. How will you find your loved ones? Make sure you have a disaster communication plan to stay in touch. After a disaster, communications can be difficult; sometimes it is easier to get through to a contact person out of state than making a local call. If family members become separated in a disaster, have them call this person and let them know where they are and if they are okay. As part of your emergency preparedness plan, you will also want to ask a family member or friend who lives in another state or area to be the point of contact for your family. In case you get separated from one another, any or all of you can call this person so you can tell the others where you are. Make sure that even the younger children know this number.

Gathering Emergency Supplies. When a disaster occurs, there might not be access to food, water or electricity for days, or even weeks or months. You should store enough emergency food to provide for your family for at least 3 days, however, FEMA recommends that you have enough emergency supplies to take care of yourself and family for 2 weeks. You want foods that don’t require refrigeration and are ready to eat. There are several types and brands of ready to eat emergency foods available. You also want to make sure to include things like baby food and formula or other items that would be needed for infants or seniors. Water is so essential for survival. In many emergencies, public water supplies may either be disrupted or become contaminated and unsuitable for use.You will want to have at least 2 gallons per person per day. The average person drinks about a ½ gallon per day leaving the gallon and ½ for personal hygiene and food preparation. Other survival items you need to include in your emergency preparedness kit is a flashlight, radio – battery operated extra batteries, pocket knife, whistle, dust mask, extra clothes, emergency cash, emergency contact numbers and a first aid kit. Ambulances and medical personnel may not be able to access the area for quite some time. It is best if the family has care items available to aid anyone who is injured. A family should prepare themselves for a disaster as soon as possible. Being prepared could be the thing that keeps everyone safe in the worst of situations

Family Survival Kits Are Critical For Emergency Survival Preparedness

Family Survival Kits Are Critical For Emergency Survival Preparedness

A few people, albeit very few people, take family survival kits for granted. They assume that either they will never really be in a disaster or that the stock they have already in the house is sufficient enough for the survival of the family even without a proper emergency survival preparedness kit. There are many reasons why professionally packed family survival kits are important and are explained below.

Emergency Survival : Flooded house. emergency survival preparedness
Emergencies Demand Preparation. How Prepared is Your Family? Do You Have a Plan Yet?

Emergency preparedness is an activity that every family should engage in. A disaster can happen in any area and they always strike suddenly. Often the survival gear a person has makes all the difference between life and death for them and those around them. When a person with a family neglects to make disaster preparedness a priority by making sure that they have all the emergency essentials required they are neglecting to properly care for the ones they claim to love.

A disaster can leave your family without food, water, clothing, or shelter. Emergency rescue teams have a hard time getting to every victim when a disaster is spread far and wide. That means a family could be left for many days without life’s necessities. For some people living many days without food and water is simply not an option. There are quite often family members who can’t go without their medicines for an extended period of time. Some people recognize the importance of having emergency survival essentials such as emergency supplies of water and freeze-dried foods stocked in their survival kit, but they cannot predict every item that might be needed and more often than not something very important could be left out.

There are companies who specialize in creating family survival kits. They know all the things it takes for a family to survive when a disaster strikes. These kits are not always one size but a lot of times they’re compiled according to the number and ages of the members in the family as well as how long a family is going to need to use their emergency survival kit. This will more than likely be dictated by how far they live from emergency services and knowing how long it’s going to take those services to reach them. This means that nothing is left out of the kit so the family can rest with peace of mind as they are sure to have what is needed to provide them with the best possible care during life’s hardest times.

Emergencies Demand Preparation! Customize Yours For Your Family.   Remember that kits are only good if you have a good plan to go with them. Do you know what disaster will most likely affect you? Customize your plan here, now.

Just as important, a family survival kit is not any good if it does not survive the storm or other types of disaster that can befall the family. The old method of disaster preparedness by packing emergency essentials in plastic garbage bags is just not the most effective approach. Anything can happen to kits packed in such a careless manner. Has anybody thrown away anything that you had stowed in a plastic garbage bag? But the family survival kits that professionals prepare, are placed in cases strong enough to withstand most disasters that could happen to them. These cases are waterproof, windproof, and fireproof. They can be stored in strategic locations such as a fallout, storm, or bomb safe room. These kits are designed to last for many years and never go bad. They are a reliable source of resources in a time of need.

When a disaster or emergency hits your area, the best way to make sure that your family is well prepared to survive by having the right kind of family survival kits. There is no reason to go without the survival gear that your family needs. It would be a shame to survive a disaster only to suffer and perish from dehydration, starvation, a lack of dry clothes, warm shelter, or basic first aid supplies. It’s important that you secure your family’s  survival kit and master emergency preparedness by simply clicking on any of the links provided in this article, today. You’ll appreciate it, your spouse will appreciate it and most of all, your family will appreciate it…especially when the time comes when you’ll need it.

The Ultimate Survival Kit for your family is knowing what you’re giving them to eat. The following books detail a grandiose ruse set in place by our own food industry to force our society into a massive consumption of drugs just to manage the pain created by their food. This is a sinister, corporate ruse being perpetrated right now on an unsuspecting public simply to increase a  profit margin. The profit involves several industries encompassing 1,000’s of corporations. The true cost is born by you.

Storm Survival – Emergency Hurricane Survival

To many, it seems strange to have a survival plan for preparedness. Goods and services are always available. To many survival-ism is getting out the woods. For many, each year surviving in the city becomes a reality when some sort of natural disaster or other situation arises. Very quickly, a disaster can become a survival situation, which you should be prepared for. Often the last thing you think about during a flood is water. With all the water around, finding clean drinking water may be difficult, at the easiest.

Flooding : Flooded street in the city emergency survival preparedness
Water everywhere and none to drink. Where do you go? Discover how do you purify water to drink.

One needs to be prepared in case emergency services can’t reach you in time to keep your family alive. This could happen for any number of reasons, roads may be clogged with traffic or they may not even exist anymore due to floods, earthquake, hurricane or tornado damage. For whatever the reason emergency services may take too long to get to you to ensure your survival and that of your family.

For many flooding, mudslides, hurricanes, snow storms, and fires can turn normal city life into a bit of a mess for a few days and sometimes a few weeks. Most are good about getting insurance for these situations in case there is some property damage but do very little about being prepared to wait out the situation. There are services that can help you out in time of need, but depending on the service and the day you need it, they might run into major problems themselves and may not be able to reach you in time.

It’s in these cases when you need to make sure that you have some basic supplies in your home in the form of a 72 hour emergency survival kit that can rely on if you were to be stuck inside for a few days or had to move on to another location because of fire danger or the weather. We all know how devastating a hurricane or tornado can be. But what if you live in an earthquake zone or near a volcano that’s likely to erupt at any time. Maybe you live in a region that’s susceptible to blizzards and have to live with the possibility of being snowed in.

A  home 72-hour emergency home survival kit is important because home is where you and your family spend most of the time and safety and security are what home is all about. It’s home where your family is and they’re the very first people you would want to be safe should a disaster arise. The survival kits found at home are usually weatherproof and in durable containers. It should also be portable so it can readily be carried to any parts of the house. It should contain enough food to feed a family of two, three or four for up to 3 days.

Having a 72-hour emergency survival kit is only part of your concern though. You also need a plan of action and lists of what to do, what not to do, when to do it and when not to do anything. You should have lists and separate kits for everyone in your family because each one’s needs are different and they more than likely have different requirements. This is evident if you have a family member who’s diabetic or asthmatic of kids with ADD or ADHD or any other form of developmental disability. This makes compiling your different emergency survival kits even that much more important, as you need to make sure there’s enough of the right kind medicine for each one in the family that needs it.

Having a plan for everyone in the family is as crucial as having a plan for each type of disaster so that during the stressful time everyone can focus on the plan and not be panicking because panic is your worst enemy. The last thing you’ll need in that time is anyone prone to panic. By focusing on your plan and lists you’ll be able to keep your attention focused on what’s need and there won’t be any time for panicking.

As mentioned above, think of about issues personal to each member of your family when laying out your lists and plans. If you are a diabetic, think about how you would handle your diabetic supplies during a time like this. If anyone is disabled your first consideration is going to be how to attend to their needs.

Ultimately, don’t be one of the families whose plan is to sit and wait for help. You never know how long it’s going to take for that help to get to you, so the only responsible thing to do is to start today to make sure that what you provide for your family is something that ensures your family’s survival.

Will your lighter work in a hurricane? This one will!

Emergency Preparedness Checklist

Emergency Preparedness Checklist

No one knows when disaster might strike or where they will be when an emergency situation happens. It could occur while you’re at home, traveling in your car, at work, while on vacation, or while exploring the great outdoors. It could be something that lasts a few hours or a few days. To cope with any type of crisis situation, emergency preparedness is essential.

Emergency Checklist : fountain pen lying on ' Emergency Preparedness Checklist ' emergency survival preparedness

There are several key components of a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan. How well are you prepared? Below is a checklist that addresses emergency preparedness. See how prepared you are to face any type of catastrophe. The more questions you can answer yes to on the checklist below, the more prepared you find yourself when an emergency strikes you.

How many on this checklist can you answer yes to?

1. When you go hiking, mountain climbing, boating, fishing, cross-country skiing, canoeing, or take part in any other outdoor activity, do you have a survival kit with you in case you get lost, injured, or separated from the group?

2. Do you have an emergency preparedness plan so that all family members know where to go and how to get in touch in case a disaster occurs when everyone’s away from home, such as at work and at school?

3. Do you have an emergency preparedness disaster supplies kit for your home? For your office? For your car?

4. Does your survival kit include the basics of a three-day supply per person of food and water; a battery powered radio; a flashlight; a first aid kit; an emergency blanket; matches in a waterproof container or a fire starter kit; hygiene and sanitation items; a rescue signal, such as a whistle; extra clothing; a manually operated can opener; extra batteries; copies of identification; cash and change; and other items that you and your family require on a daily basis, such as prescriptions, eye glasses, and hearing aid batteries?

5. Do you maintain your disaster supplies kit by changing food and water supplies every six months; storing canned and packaged foods in a cool, dry place; replacing expired items; and updating the contents each year or as your family’s needs change?

6. Are you aware of the risk level in your community for possible hazards or emergency situations? These can include floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and lighting, winter storms, earthquakes, landslides, extreme heat or cold, volcanoes, house fires & wildfires, tsunamis, hazardous material leaks, nuclear power plant incidents, terrorism, explosions, chemical threats, biological threats and nuclear blasts.

7. Does your emergency preparedness plan include an evacuation route for you and your family in the event you have to leave your home, work, or school?

8. Do you know how to shut off utility services to your homes, such as natural gas, the main water valve, and electricity?

9. Have you established an emergency preparedness plan for your pets?

10. Are you prepared to shelter-in-place at home, work, school, or in between, and to seal off a room from outside air in the event of chemical or radiological contaminants?

Have you made out lists for;  what to do and what not do, as well as where you can go and not go and provisions to take with you? These lists could mean the difference between life and death for you and your family. While preparing your lists for an emergency or natural disaster can be overwhelming, taking the time to take these emergency preparedness steps will help you and your family better cope with a stressful situation. Emergency preparedness also ensures that you and your loved ones will all make it through the crisis situation much better than if you didn’t.

Survival & Preparedness

Survival & Preparedness

Survival and preparedness are the most often overlooked aspects of any outdoor adventure. Regardless of your level of experience or the degree of difficulty you choose to undertake, sooner or later you will be forced into a survival situation. One of the survival books I have recently read made mention that we have become aliens on our own planet. It’s a deep and profound statement if you really think about it. How many people do you know that could (or would even try) to function without a cell phone, credit cards, television, the internet, fast food, or the grocery store? The writer went on to say that statistically, the degree of danger is much higher at an ATM late at night in a big city than it is in the wilderness if you are prepared.

The fact is, no matter how well we prepare there will always be factors beyond our control. Mechanical failure, forces of nature, and human behavior are difficult to predict and impossible to control. With that in mind, the question shifts from “what if”, to “will I be prepared when I’m faced with adversity?” It’s surreal to realize that a stocking cap, a book of matches, and a bottle of water could save your life.

Wilderness Survival : Portrait of an asian chinese backpacker cooking on a camping gas stove while hiking and exploring on a tourist adventure in the wilderness mountains
Guarantee Your Food Supply and Never Run Out of Food.

A few years ago I was elk hunting with a friend. We parked our 4-wheelers and started tracking our quarry. Before we knew it, more than an hour had elapsed and we were a fair distance from our point of origin. After spending another hour back-tracking and piecing together our ascent, it started getting dark. There we were, 2 seasoned outdoorsmen, wandering around in circles. We made the decision to follow a stream downhill until we hit a road. We walked into camp at nightfall and set about planning the retrieval of our ATV’s. Although we made many mistakes, we knew enough to get back to camp and admit defeat before we were forced to spend an intimate night together on the mountain.

The best way to prepare yourself is through education. Read everything you can about real-life survival situations and practice the techniques you learn with your family. There is a wealth of information available in books and on the internet. I have found that although some books are better than others, I can almost always extract useful information from any publication.

The moral of the story? Take extra clothing, food, water, a survival kit, plan for every contingent and a map everywhere you go (at the minimum, and regardless of the weather), and be sure your friends and family know your itinerary. It may well be a matter of life and death.
